ABOUT THE SESSION

In this session, Lynnée Denise will provide a general history of the cultural significance of DJ Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage. By examining the ecosystem that surrounded the club, including dancers, DJs, record labels, engineers, producers, and a world-famous dance floor—this talk opens a treasure trove of historical facts and oral testimonies that situate the Paradise Garage as one of the most storied spaces in electronic music history. Through sound, storytelling, and close listening, audiences will encounter a world of innovations and technological inventions. Those in attendance are required to select and bring in one song released by Prelude Records and one song released by West End Records.

ABOUT LYNNÉE DENISE

Lynnée Denise is a DJ, writer, and cultural worker who coined the term "DJ Scholarship" in 2013 to describe a practice that treats records, dance floors, radio waves, and sound system culture as sites of knowledge production. She has spun her record collection across continents, cities, and countries while placing house music in its proper social context and tracing its African diasporic lineages.Among the first to pioneer the DJ live lecture and listening session as a public practice, Lynnée's work bridges scholarship, performance, and sound. This has led her to doctoral research at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she specializes in Black Atlantic thought, sonic archives, and the movement of Black cultural knowledge through music and listening practices. From clubs and festivals to museums and universities, Lynnée continues to explore the social worlds that connect house music to the broader histories of the African diaspora.
